Legs: Yo, brain. Yo. YO!!!!!!
Brain: What?
Legs: What the hell’s going on here?
Brain: Huh?
Legs: We’re running 11:15s here. We don’t run 11:15′s. We run 13:30s. Slow it down a little maybe?
Brain: Not today. I just read Sally’s blog.
Legs: Who’s Sally?
Brain: Sally Meyerhoff. Stellar Arizona runner. Here’s her blog post from Sunday: ”I cannot express how HAPPY I am with where I am in my life right now though, and how grateful I feel for being able to do what I do. I just wouldn’t trade it for anything and any time I am feeling not very motivated, I think about how miserable I feel when I am not training or doing something else I don’t LOVE. I totally and completely love this life I’m living and the most fabulous thing is that I know it’s only going to get 20 times better by the end of the year. Woo hoo baby!”
Legs: Yeah, so?
Brain: She died two days later in an accident on her bike.
Legs: Oh. Wow.
Brain: Yeah. 27 years old.
Long silence.
Legs: Yo, brain. Yo. YO!!!!
Brain: What?
Legs: I think I’ve got another 10 seconds a mile left. Speed it up a little maybe?
Brain: I think Sally would like that.

ride, sally, ride!
That is sad. I read some of Sally’s blog after reading your blog about her. She really was an awesome person and runner. This is a another good reason to steer clear of the roads if you can.
Sally was a class act. I popped my hamstring at the beginning of a race and decided to finish. She spent about 10 minutes talking to me mid-pack because she knew I was struggling. I remembering her saying, “Good luck, got to go,” before she sprinted off in her pink compression socks. She found me at the end of the race and congratulated me on what turned out to be a decent race despite my injury. I later found out she had won the race by a wide margin. I saw her at a couple more races after that and noticed she always made a point to talk to back-of-the-packers. RIP Sally. Long may you run.
Really nice, Garbo.
