the age-old runner’s debate is english vs. metric. why is the english system of measurement better?
If robert frost had been burdened with the metric system we would have had:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And kilometers to go before I sleep,
And kilometers to go before I sleep.
cat stevens would have sung:
kilometers from nowhere
I guess Ill take my time
Oh yeah, to reach there
and one of our most beloved jazz musicians would be named Kilometers Davis.
although the metric system may be more practical for running purposes, the english system is superior for poetry by a country kilometer. i rest my case.
which is nice, because my case very much likes to rest.
I awaken your case.
Green hectares is the place to be,
farm living is the life for me.
ow.
I know, it’s hard to argue with a TV theme song. They make such good points.
p.s. Kilometre is more poetic with the traditional English spelling, if only because it looks fancier. My jury is still out on which I prefer for running, miles of klicks: http://myrunshorts.com/2009/04/03/the-bilingual-runner/
