If you had told 23-year-old Gary that 35 years later he’d be running while livestreaming the new unreleased Ani album off of the New York Times website through a portable phone supercharged with a tiny power amp boosted by a solar charger, he would have said, “Dear God, you’re running 13:45 miles??? Didn’t we have an agreement that you’d just kill yourself if you ever got that slow??? Why are you still doing this??? Eat some cadmium already!!!!!”

23-year-old Gary is kind of a grouch.

But he’s probably on to something.
